We have investigated the electrical properties of a ferroelectoric liquid crystalline semiconductors, a mixture of ƒÖ,ƒÖ'-dioctylterthiphene (8-TTP-8) and 4mol % of FLC120 (Chisso Corporation, optically active 2-biphenyl prymidine derivative) in the bulk and at the interface of the liquid crystal and electrodes. This materials system shows chiral SmC phase induced by FLC120 and spontaneous polarization of 4 nC/cm2. when biased. Because of aromatic core moiety of terthiophene, this materials system shows electronic conduction and its hole mobility was 10-4 (cm2/Vs) in the SmC phase, which is comparable to that of 8-TTP-8. Furthermore, because of the orientation of dipole in a thin cell of2.2µm, it was observed that the hole injection from the ITO electrode was enhanced compared with 9µm at the same electric field of 2x104 V/cm . This results suggest a new way of device application of the ferroelectric liquid crystals.
